My First Scribble for Scribble Jam!

Hello Scribblers!!

So here’s my first scribble that I did for our Scribble Jam!

Days Up!

I’ve committed to doing a scribble a day for a month!!!  Do you want to scribble along too?

For me, there’s nothing better than a scribble.  It calms me, makes me smile and I’m always amazed at the images that come out through my fingers from my mind.   I love line and I love color so it’s all about creating lines that form shapes that I can color in!  I never really know what will evolve, it really depends on the way that I am feeling when I put my pen onto the paper and it just sort of happens.   My scribbles always seem to reflect my mood and what I’m feeling while I’m creating them.

This morning’s scribble is a really happy one. I’m calling it “Days Up!” because as I woke up this morning as the day was dawning, I remember thinking that it’s going to be a really amazing day.  I scribbled my daily scribble using a black Sharpie marker for the outlines and filled in the color with these awesome Copic markers.

Copic Markers

Would you like to get scribbley?  Take out your journal and a pen, pencil, crayon or whatever you like (or would like to try) and just start a scribble – close your eyes for a moment and keep scribbling.  You’ll be surprised at what can appear on your paper and even better how it makes you feel!  Don’t worry about how it looks; it’s all about enjoying the process.  So go ahead, join me and connect with your inner scribbler!!!  Enjoy!

Get Scribbling!

by Melissa McClain

Happy Thursday, Scribblers!

It’s my first “official” day blogging for Scribble Blog and I couldn’t be MORE excited!  Guess what we’re launching today?

Scribble Jam!™

What, you might ask, is Scribble Jam?  It’s a creative activity just for you!  It’s an opportunity for you to get creative, have some fun, play with color, and connect with your “inner Scribbler”.  I know, I know…I can hear you now, “But I’m not creative.”  Or maybe you’re saying “I can’t draw.”  Maybe the thought of creating something artistic takes you back to childhood and an art teacher, classmates, or parent who belittled your artistic abilities.  Don’t go there!

Creativity Isn’t Learned, It Is Released

This isn’t about being an artist!  It’s not about doing it “right”.  THIS is about YOU.  Scribble Jam is about tapping into YOUR creativity in a new way and discovering what happens in your life because of it.  I listened to a wonderful interview with Brene Brown this week.  In it she talked about one of my core beliefs that everyone is creative, “but, there are people who use creativity…and people who don’t.”  If you’ve got it, you should use it.  Right?

Right!

Scribble Jam is your chance to get creative.  In the privacy of your home, office, local park, favorite coffee shop…wherever you want!  Here’s how it works and what you’ll need.

Make a Scribble a Day!

Make a commitment to set aside time just for you to get creative every day.  5-10 minutes a day to  connect with your thoughts and open your mind to creativity and new ideas. I Scribble first thing in the morning.  Before my day gets started.  It helps me set a tone for the day.

If you think you can’t find time to dedicate just for you then make it a family activity and get everyone Scribbling together!  Set a goal:  “I’m going to Scribble for…7 days, 14 days, 30 days.”  You choose.  I started this pledge for myself almost 60 days ago (it started as a 30 day challenge…it’s hard to let go of something so wonderful) and I’ve only missed ONE day!

Get a “Scribble Journal.”  This is great fun!  Your Scribble Journal is your private, creative oasis (unless you want to share of course…which I HOPE you do!).  It will hold all the thoughts, feelings, and ideas that you will be expressing creatively and colorfully.  Your Scribble Journal can be anything; a notebook, a sketch pad, or a bound journal.  Find something that inspires you and makes you feel special.  Purchase something new as a gift to your inner Scribbler.  My inner Scribbler LOVES to get gifts!

I use a 5 ½ x 5 ½” unlined journal with heavy paper.  It’s easy to carry around in my bag and the pages aren’t big and intimidating.

Excited yet?  Wait…there’s more!

Colors!  Of course if you are going to Scribble, you are going to need LOTS of colors.  Start with what feels comfortable.  My original Scribble started with crayons.  Then I moved to colored pencils.  Now I’m a pastel fanatic with the occasional mix of colored pencils.  Start with whatever you have available.  Markers, crayons, colored pencils…or go buy something new and exciting that you’ve always wanted to try.

Set aside Your Scribble Time and Start Coloring.  Start Expressing.  Get Creative!

Scared of the blank page?  I understand…I was too!  Just start with something,  anything…a shape…a line…a word!  There are no rules.  There is no right or wrong.  It’s just you and your colors and your thoughts.  If you ask me, the world needs a lot more of that!

Some of my early “thoughtful” moments in my Journal

I’ll be writing about the Scribble Jam  once a month here on Scribble Blog and sharing my own Journal pages…and even some of yours!  We’ll talk about the benefits of activating your right brain through the Scribble, inspiration that comes from sharing our Scribbles, and much much more.

I encourage you to share your Scribbles on the page or here on the blog. You can do this!  I know you can!  So start Scribbling!

"When you are brave, you make everyone around you a little braver." ~ Brene Brown

Scribbles are inspiring. Sharing is brave!

Meet Scribble Man!

Hi Scribblers!

I wanted to introduce you to some of the characters from Scribble Town! I will be posting one bio a week so you can become acquainted with all the Scribble Town friends.

For today, I’d like to introduce you to Scribble Man!

Scribble Man loves to Scribble and there is nothing more special than a scribble.  To Scribble Man, whether something wiggles or giggles, or snarls he thinks you can change the world with a scribble.

Scribble Man has a scribbletastic group of friends – Zippy, Kimmi, Carlos, Tubber and Eraser Man – and together they go on adventures to discover new places.  He’s the leader of the team and is  always there in a flash to help all scribblers. Scribble Man is a jokester and likes to help by giving clues and most of the time, they rhyme!

What’s Your Creative Translation?

Hi Scribblers!

Did you have a chance to read Translation is Dialogue?

Here is the outline of Wavos, the piece I created for the installation.

Wavos, by Andi Thea (Outline)

I was thinking, it would be fun to see how different people interpret this and see how they can add to it to transform the original work of art. Just, click on the image, print and get scribbley! Use your imagination and try different colors, patterns, crayons, markers, paint or whatever you can think of. I’d love to see your finished creations!

Translation is Dialogue

by Arlene Tucker

I’m excited to tell Scribblers about Translation is Dialogue!

Translation is Dialogue (TID) is an ongoing project that was first presented in Iceland in May 2010.  Then it was installed at a conference in Tartu, Estonia in November 2010.  A total of 23 artists submitted their interpretations in Tartu which showcased a huge array of mediums from artists all over the world.  It was such an amazing experience to see people from all  around the world creating and collaborating!  The most recent TID event was in Finland in June 2011 as part of the SHuSH Collective Helsinki workshop.  Now TID is coming to Brooklyn for a full installation of Phase 2: Make it Translate!

This is an image from the Baile: Yorukong Palenke series created for TID by Nathan Williams. Title: Baile (19-21) Medium: mixed media collage

TID goes like this:  I picked a song and gave it to Alejandra Pineda Silva, a dancer and semiotician.  She then choreographed a dance performance on the basis of this song. Recordings of Alejandra describing her envisioned dance was then sent to various artists worldwide.  Their participation in the next stage of translation was to create something on the basis of her description.  Now, not only is there the translation of the musician’s intent to sound, sound to recording, recording to ears, Alejandra’s ears to thoughts, thoughts to voice, voice to MP3, these artists have created an entirely new extension of melody, meaning, and purpose with their interpretation.  In essence, from thought to matter, the continuity of mind is forever transforming as the viewers reinterpret their surroundings and make them a part of their history.  Just as Alejandra wasn’t limited, these translators weren’t restricted to any medium either.

The idea is to “do” and not think so much! By doing, we build momentum and in this case, a continuous transformation. I’d love for you to get involved! Click here to learn how to participate. TID is for all ages, so just pick up that crayon, paintball, or whatever is closest to you and begin your interpretation!

If you are in New York City this weekend, I warmly invite you to a full installation of Translation is Dialogue at the Brooklyn Navy Yards.

When: Friday, July 29th from 6-9pm is the TID workshop
Saturday, July 30th from 5-9pm is the SHOW!

Where: Freeform + Deform (http://freeformdeform.com)
20 Grand Ave, Loft 607 (between Park Ave. and Flushing Ave.)
Brooklyn, New York 11205

Thank you, Chief Scribbler for your interpretation, ‘Wavos.’  I can’t wait to see how Wavos will transform.  To think, this came from your imagination while listening to Alejandra’s description is so fascinating to me!  We don’t always have an explanation, but we can try to express ourselves. I have to say, the best part of this project is seeing how unique each one of us is.

Getting Scribbley with Translation is Dialogue

Hi Scribblers!

I’m starting to work on Phase 2 of my painting titled Wavos.

Wavos, by Andi Thea

Wavos is a piece of artwork I created for an installation that premiered in Estonia called Translation is Dialogue.  Phase 2 of TID is now on this side of the Atlantic!  The show is on Saturday, July 30th at Freeform + Deform in The Navy Yards, Brooklyn from 5-9pm.  Come on out if you have the chance!

Translation is Dialogue is the brain child of Arlene Tucker.

I have had the pleasure of working with Arlene and getting to know her for the past six years.  She’s been my assistant, my right hand Scribbler and is definitely a super creative Scribbler extraordinaire!  I’m delighted to say that Arlene has continued to work with us on Scribble Town although she is currently living in Finland.

Two years ago Arlene left the USA for Estonia to study Semiotics (The study of how meaning is created).  She has a very special gift of looking at life through a child’s eyes.  Her imagination is unique and her mind is able to sort through the most complex situations in order to filter them down to their simplest forms.

Check back tomorrow, Arlene will be telling you about Phase 2 of Translation is Dialogue and how you can become involved.
