Scribblin’ Inspiration

Scribblin’ Inspiration

Inspiration is a funny thing– it can really come from anywhere. And while inspiration is all around us, sometimes it feels like there’s just a big roadblock between your head and your hands.

Creative prompts can be a great way to get the imagination rolling (see here, here, and here), but maybe they’re too specific for the mood you’re in. There are times when you could use a jumpstart, but want something broad that you can take and run with in your own way. Well, we’ve got you covered here, too!

Every so often, we’ll throw out an image or idea to get the ball rolling. Any part of it can pique your interest– texture, color, topic, associations, whatever! Let the idea take you wherever you want.

Now without further ado, I give you today’s inspiration. (Drumroll please)

The jellyfish is a most elusive creature. Feared for its sting, it can easily ruin a day at the beach, yet it is so beautiful and elegant in its movement. Its transparency and long flowing tentacles give it an unlikely grace. Shape-wise, though, it reminds me of a mushroom. Its variations in color and its ghost-like quality make it a great subject for such mediums as watercolors, colored pencils, and tissue paper. But feel free to try anything! Again, these are just some thoughts and images to get you started.

Exploring by coloring!

Hi Scribblers,

Do you like to color? Coloring, scribbling, drawing….these are all great ways to explore your creativity. Sometimes you can sit down with a pen or pencil with an exact thought in mind and try to draw it, but if you aren’t an “artist” you can still exercise your creative skills!

Simply sit down with a blank piece of paper and a crayon, pencil, marker or pen and simply start to color. Where do the squiggly lines take you? What will you draw? You may not konw at first, but as you continue to squiggle and scribble all of a sudden you may realize that your mind is starting to draw something!

See…

At first I simply started with the orange marker at the center and started to scribble on the paper. Before I knew it, I was drawing a rose!

What will you create? Share your drawings, scribbles and sketches with us on our Scribble Shop page!

A Scribbley Approach to Inspiring Creativity (part 1)

Hi Scribblers!

My name is Andi. You may remember me- I’m the Chief Scribbler at Scribble Town! Since I was little girl, I have always loved everything creative. My heart was always happiest when I sat down with a pen and paper to just scribble and create new things. Sometimes, however, it can be hard to find that spark of inspiration to get you on the right track, so for today, I wanted to share with you some tips on Inspiring Creativity!

  1. Get out, try new things.  Go for a walk.  Take the time to experience the sights, sounds and smells that are all around you.  You will be able to draw upon your new experiences for inspiration.
  2. Keep an idea folder.  Every time you see something that you find interesting, place it in a folder, or file it in your computer or on Pinterest.
  3. Carry a SketchbookSketchbooks are great; scribble your ideas and your thoughts. Instead of writing out your thoughts, draw them! This is not intended to be for perfect drawings – it’s more of a diary for thoughts and inspiration.  I like to date the pages because it’s fun to thumb through them later and remember where I was and what inspired me.
  4. Look and see. Really look at an object or work of art and allow it to speak to you.  If you sit quietly and study the object you will see all types of things that you didn’t notice on first glance.  Look at the shape, the color, do the shapes and colors repeat themselves?  Use that experience to draw from when you create your next project.
  5. Experiment.  Adding just one new element to something you are working on can really spice things up! Take risks, challenge yourself and see what you come up with.  Don’t be afraid to experiment.

I hope these tips get your creative wheels turning! Start right now! Try one (or more) of these tips and see what you create. Don’t forget, you can always share your finished creations with us here on Scribble Blog or on our wall!

Check back on Friday for for part 2 of the Scribbley Approach to Inspiring Creativity!
