Yummy Heart Cookies!

Hi Scribblers!

Looking for a a fun treat to make with the kids? Make and decorate heart shaped cookies!

To make the cookies from scratch, check out our Linzer Tart post to find the recipe!

To make and decorate these cookies, you will need:
- Heart Shaped Cookie Cutters
- Parchment Paper
- White Cookie Icing
- Pink Cookie Icing
- Red Cookie Icing
- Chocolate Melts (Pink Melts optional)
- Heart-shaped Glitter Sprinkles in Pink and White

Once your cookies have come out of the oven and cooled, it’s time to get creative!

Here are a few tips to get you started!

Dip your cookie into melted Chocolate melts. You can dip the whole cookie, or  make a black/pink cookie!

Cover the inside of a cookie with Pink Cookie Icing and then drag out the edges. This kind of creates a sewn patch work effect.

Let the pink icing dry. Next, draw little hearts using a toothpick and red icing. To make the heart shape, draw a thin “V” and then pull the icing into a heart shape. (You can also use the toothpick to make polka dots!)

Make a waterfall effect! First, cover your cookie in Cookie Icing. Next, draw horizontal lines across your cookie.

Using a toothpick, lightly drag down evenly spaced vertical lines and your pattern will appear!

TIP: Let the cookie icing dry at least 1 hour before serving.

Enjoy! We would love to see a picture of your finished cookies! Share with us on

A Valentine’s Day Photo Frame!

Hi Scribblers!

I don’t know about you but when it comes to giving a gift, I’m always looking for something unique, special and intrinsically me! This year, make a DIY project with room for creativity! Looking for inspiration? Try making a Valentine’s Day Photo Frame for your special someone!

This craft is easy to create!

Supply Suggestions:
-A wooden photo frame (new or one you have around this house- edges should be smooth)
- Red Hemp Thread
- Natural Cross Stitch Fabric Linen
-Tacky Glue
- Embellishments.

To make this craft, simply trace the out line of the photo frame onto the fabric.

Cut the fabric about a 1/2″ from the lines of your tracing. In the center area, cut a snip into the angle of the frame so that this part of the fabic will easily fold around the edges.

Spread a thin layer of glue on your photo frame.

Glue flat against the frame to hold in place and be sure to smooth out the surface with your fingers. Fold the fabric around the edges of the frame for a finished look.

Next, using the red hemp thread, create twisty/fun designs around the frame, gluing the thread down as you move along. Add embellishments to the frame  by gluing them to the thread. Lay frame flat and let dry.

Insert a picture of your loved one and present your hand crafted frame as a gift!

Here is a quick tip:

When sewing the edges of the monster, use the buttonhole stitch. This stitch is easy to do and looks great when finished. To do this stitch, start by sewing the needle through the fabric from back to front. Bring the thread through the fabric, and then place the needle about a 1/4 inch from where you came through. Insert the needle, and loop the thread around the front of the needle before pulling it all through the fabric.

Once you have looped the the thread around your needle, pull the needle through the fabric and continue this step around your love monster.

Get Creative with a Faux Quilted Placemat

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful holiday to get creative with. Valentine’s hearts, teddy bears, treats…but what about decorating the table for your little ones? This year, include the kids in the creativity and make a Faux Quilted Placemat!

To make this craft, you will need:
-Fat Quarters in four different colors
-Pinking Shears
-Scissors
-Card Stock
-Tacky Glue

To start, cut fabric in 2 3/4 x 2 3/4 squares using the pinking shears.  You will needs 6 squares of each of the 4 colors.

Using the remaining fabric pieces, cut hearts of different shapes and sizes (however, they must be small enough to fit inside the squares). You will need 6 hearts or each of the 4 colors.

Cut a rectangle that is 11 x 17 out of cardstock or oaktag. Paste the squares onto the cardstock by moving across from the top left corner to the top right corner. Overlap each consecutive square very slightly over the the previous square.

Continue doing this row by row, alternating colors in a pattern as you move along. Paste hearts on top of the squares. Put contrasting colors on top of the squares, again in a patterned sequence. Notice how the colors in the image below line up in a diagonal.

Once all the squares and hearts are in place, you may be left with some cardstock exposed on the right side and along the bottom. This is okay, simply trim the edges with pinking shears.

Repeat this process 3 times (or as many times as needed) to make a placemat set for your family. Looking for a quicker option? Alternatively, you could take your initial finished mat and have a color photocopies made of the mat. If you choose to do this, trim all 4 edges with pinking shears after you have made your photocopies. (NOTE: If you choose this option, do not trim the leftover cardstock mentioned earlier until AFTER you have made your photocopies)

Once you have finished making your mats (handmade or photocopied), you will need to laminate them. This will make the surface smooth for easy clean-up!

Place your mats out for breakfast/lunch/dinner and enjoy!
