Cute Candy Corn

Now that October has arrived, Halloween is on the horizon. That means costume planning, spooky decorations, and of course… candy and treats! Since it’s only the beginning of the month, one way to slowly start gearing up for the holiday is to incorporate things that work for both fall and Halloween.

The perfect solution: a little candy corn décor! This quick and easy craft is perfect for setting the tone for October… plus it has pretty fall colors! Bonus: it’s simple and safe enough for kids to work on, as well.

You’ll need yarn (white, yellow, and orange), scissors, glue, and a foam cone (in a pinch, you can create your own cone with some poster board and tape).

Start at the bottom with your yellow yarn. Glue the end to the foam (you may also be able to just tuck it in the back… depends on your cone) and start wrapping! Once you’ve gotten about a third of the way up, cut the yarn and glue or tuck in the end. Next up: orange! Repeat the process with your orange yarn, and finally finish up with white to the top. Tada!

These candy cuties add some festive fun to any room without going too overtly “Halloween” too soon. But as the month goes on… look out! More delightfully spooky projects to come.

Get Blown Away by Yarn-bombing!

Hi Scribblers,

As you know, I love found art! Found art is anything you FIND that can be considered ART. It could be graffiti, an old house, a mural on a sidewalk or even a pile of scraps of garbage that you found on the street…basically, it is anything that you find that for a quick moment makes you stop to consider its beauty, complexity or simplicity.

Well, today I came across a real zinger!

Found in Lower Manhattan (unknown artist)

This bike has been yarn-bombed! Yarn-bombing is when someone decides to cover an ordinary object with crocheted yarn.

There has been one NYC local who has been making quite the impression with her yarn bombing.

The Cube at Astor Place, NYC

“Olek” is a guerrilla artist who is known for her yarn-bombing and her work is easily recognized!

The Wall Street Bull, NYC

As you can see, she tends to make a certain camoflauge pattern out of pink, green, blue and black yarn.

Found in Brooklyn, NY

I only recently came to understand what yarn-bombing is, but I am certainly blown away!

If you want to see how she does it, check out this video:

These artists not only have to plan ahead and take a considerable amount of time creating these things, but they do it quickly, with a perfect fit and without ever informing the owners of the objects, pieces, statues, etc of their artistic plans!

Have you seen yarn-bombing in your home town or city? We would LOVE to see what kinds of cool things you’ve found! Please share your pictures with us on !
